Marble

This is a metamorphic rock originating from sedimentary carbonate rocks – either limestone or dolostone – and composed mainly of calcite, a crystalline form of calcium carbonate. The distinctive swirls of marble are usually a result of mineral impurities in the original limestone and contribute to colour variation. There are many kinds of marble, some named after the places where they are found – for example, Carrara from Italy; Paros from Greece; Makrana from India. White marble is favoured by sculptors, who find its properties ideal for their artistic creations.

Please note that marble is not considered suitable for kitchen benchtops as it is too soft, and tends to stain easily. It is usually specified for bathroom areas and fire hearths.
